The year 2023 proved to be a remarkable one for boxing, with many highly anticipated fights coming to fruition. One of the most anticipated matchups, however, did not materialize – a showdown between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and IBF, WBA, and WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk to determine the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.
Although the Fury vs. Usyk fight did not happen in 2023, it is now the highlight of the 2024 boxing calendar. The two champions are scheduled to face off in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May 18, with all four heavyweight world titles on the line. Originally set for February 17, the bout was postponed due to a cut Fury sustained in sparring.
Another major event in Saudi Arabia is scheduled for March, featuring Anthony Joshua against Francis Ngannou. Joshua’s recent TKO victory over Otto Wallin showcased his skills, while Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, impressed in his pro boxing debut against Fury in October, despite losing a split decision. A victory for either fighter could potentially lead to a title shot against Usyk or Fury.
Saudi Arabia will also host a significant bout in the light heavyweight division in the summer. Unified champion Artur Beterbiev will face WBA titleholder Dmitry Bivol on June 1, with all four titles up for grabs. This fight promises to be a thrilling contest, with the winner being crowned the undisputed light heavyweight champion.
