The Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG) has commenced the installation of over 450,000 smart meters in the Accra West Region. This initiative aims to replace postpaid, non-smart prepaid, and faulty meters with MMS-compliant smart prepaid meters within the region over the next five months.
The meter replacement exercise is part of the company’s loss reduction program (LRP), which seeks to improve energy accounting by installing smart meters. Emmanuel Akinie, the General Manager of the Accra West Region of ECG, stated that the program would also enhance meter availability for service connection requests and reduce system losses.
Customers are assured of the convenience offered by the smart prepaid meters. They can purchase credit for their meters from anywhere using the ECG Power app or the short code *226#. Akinie emphasized that officers conducting the replacement exercise would carry official letters from ECG authorizing their activity.
Outstanding balances on the old meters will be accounted for and transferred to the new smart prepaid meters. The General Manager reiterated that the meter replacement exercise is free, and customers should not make any payments.
The districts under the Accra West region of ECG include Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korlebu, and Nsawam.
