5 Brothers Who Have Played for the Super Eagles

The history of Nigerian football would be incomplete without acknowledging the notable pairs of brothers who have represented the national team both concurrently and at different periods. This article takes a look at five siblings who have donned the green and white of the Super Eagles.

Ikechukwu and Kalu Uche

The Uche brothers are arguably the best pair in Nigeria’s football history. The duo dazzled in green and white while winning the hearts of many Nigerians and were regular names in the Super Eagles matchday squad.

Kalu Uche scored on his debut in an African Nations Cup qualifier against Angola in 2003. Ikechukwu made his debut four years later and was part of the Nigerian squad that was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During their stint with the team, Kalu scored six goals in 37 appearances, while Ikechukwu featured 49 times for the Super Eagles, scoring 19 goals. The duo spent most of their club career in Spain. Ike Uche was a member of the 2013 AFCON-winning squad.

Nwankwo and Christopher Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu, also known as Papilo, is a popular name among football fans in Nigeria and Europe, especially at Arsenal, Ajax, and Portsmouth. Papilo is Nigeria’s most decorated footballer ever, winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Eredivisie, among others. He was voted African Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1999. Nwankwo featured 86 times for the Super Eagles and played a big part in Nigeria’s Olympic gold success in Atlanta in 1996.

Not much was known about Christopher, who played only three times for the Super Eagles. He made his international debut for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier against Eritrea in 2000.

Austin ‘Jay Jay’ and Emmanuel Okocha

Arguably Nigeria’s most entertaining footballer of all time, Austin Jay Jay Okocha mesmerized Nigerian fans with his skills on the pitch and goals. The most popular of the duo, having played for PSG, Frankfurt, Bolton, and Fenerbahce, he made his Super Eagles debut in a 2-1 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Ivory Coast in 1993. He was part of the AFCON 1994 winning squad and also a key member of the 1996 team that won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Austin played 73 times for the Super Eagles, scoring 14 goals.

Emmanuel, on the other hand, played only a handful of times for the Super Eagles. He played seven times for the team, scoring just one goal.

Peter and John Utaka

Known for his blistering pace, John Utaka played notably for RC Lens, Rennes, Portsmouth, and Montpellier. He made his debut in 2002 and made 43 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring six goals. He represented Nigeria at the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.

In an interview in 2020, Peter revealed that he chose to represent Nigeria over Belgium to fulfill his dream of playing alongside his elder brother, John. Peter featured seven times for the Super Eagles.

Efe and Sam Sodje

Born in England, the Sodje brothers represented Nigeria at the international level. Efe was part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup. Sam featured five times for the Super Eagles and made his debut in a 3–0 friendly defeat to Romania in 2005.

These brothers have left a lasting legacy in Nigerian football, showcasing their talents on both national and international stages. Their contributions have not only brought pride to their families but also inspired many young footballers in Nigeria.
