President John Mahama has revealed that the government will undertake a design and feasibility study to develop a new city aimed at reducing overcrowding in Accra and enhancing administrative efficiency.
During a meeting with the European Union Ambassador and members of the EU Chamber of Commerce on May 28, 2024, Mr. Mahama shared that the proposed city would serve as a secondary administrative and commercial hub outside the Greater Accra Region. This forms part of his broader strategy ahead of the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the new city is intended to alleviate pressure on Accra’s infrastructure by relocating select ministries and government agencies. He noted that the plan would involve the construction of a modern expressway and railway to ensure seamless connectivity between the new site and Accra.
“Accra can no longer cope with the strain of rapid urban growth,” Mahama said during his Thank You tour in Dodowa, Greater Accra. “We must look ahead and invest in a well-planned city that can relieve congestion and offer room for sustainable expansion.”
He further highlighted that the initiative would not only improve government operations but also promote investment, boost economic activities, and create new opportunities for housing and development.
