A ceremony held in Poland marked the official handover of a new train, assembled in Poland for railway transportation in Ghana, to the Ghanaian government.
This train represents the initial batch of 12 cutting-edge trains from Poland, signifying a significant moment for Ghana’s transportation sector.
It is designated for use on the newly constructed Tema-Mpakadan standard-gauge railway line, which spans 97 kilometers from Tema to Mpakadan, facilitating the movement of goods and people along Ghana’s Eastern corridor.
This railway line, nearing 98% completion, is expected to be fully operational by 2024 and forms part of a larger plan to connect Ghana with Burkina Faso, linking Ouagadougou to the port in Tema.
The first train, capable of operating on both regional and long-distance lines, is anticipated to arrive in Ghana by mid-March 2024, following a transportation period of approximately four weeks from Poland.
At the handover ceremony in Poland, CEO of the Ghana Railways Development Authority, Yaw Owusu, emphasized the importance of a robust railway system for Ghana’s industrialization agenda. He highlighted the significance of introducing standard-gauge trains to Ghana for the first time, emphasizing their longevity and the need for consistent maintenance.
The procurement of these modern trains is part of a larger agreement between Ghana Railways and the Polish manufacturer, with the potential for additional orders in the future. These trains are expected to enhance the efficiency and capacity of Ghana’s rail network, contributing to economic development and improved connectivity.
