Adjetey Sowah, a legendary Ghanaian dancer, recently shared an intriguing tidbit from his past, revealing that Reggie Rockstone, known as the hiplife originator and also a dancer, used to be quite apprehensive whenever they faced off in dance competitions.
In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Sowah shed light on what made him stand out among his contemporaries – his knack for crafting dance performances with a unique mashup of songs.
Sowah reminisced, “It wasn’t just one song that I used but different kinds of music. And that is why Reggie Rockstone was scared of me anytime I used the compilation.”
This revelation stirred up some playful banter between the two dance legends. Reggie Rockstone responded to Sowah’s claims on Twitter with a touch of humor, saying, “He was none to play with, but the truth is I beat him, and he never beat me on record 😆 the times e go get me I pulled out of competition Hehehehehe.”
Sowah’s story offers a glimpse into the competitive and vibrant dance scene in Ghana during his time. Besides Reggie Rockstone, his rivals included renowned dancers like Akosua Agyepong, Gabby Adjetey, Don Arthur, and Alex Ofori, among others.
During the interview, Sowah also disclosed that he had earned a substantial income from his dance career because he consistently upheld his standards when negotiating fees. He reminisced about the 1980s when he was paid as much as 1000 cedis, a significant sum for that era.
One of the most notable achievements of Sowah’s illustrious career was winning the World Dance Championship in 1986. This accolade not only cemented his status as a dance icon but also showcased his exceptional talent and dedication to the craft.
Adjetey Sowah’s journey through Ghana’s dance landscape offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of dance competitions and the rivalry and camaraderie that existed among dancers of his generation. His innovative mashup performances were his signature, setting him apart and even giving Reggie Rockstone a run for his money on occasion. Today, Sowah remains a respected figure in Ghana’s dance and entertainment industry, celebrated for his contributions to the art form.
