Alert: Nigeria High Commission Advises Citizens in South Africa Ahead of AFCON 2023 Semifinals

The Nigeria High Commission in South Africa has issued a cautionary advisory to Nigerian residents in the country, urging them to be vigilant ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. Although the match is scheduled to take place in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire, there are concerns that its outcome may have repercussions for Nigerians living in South Africa.

Responding to these concerns, the Nigeria High Commission in South Africa has expressed alarm over potential threats faced by Nigerians in the country. Prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens, the Commission has released an advisory advising Nigerians to exercise caution before, during, and after Wednesday’s semi-final match.

The advisory, as issued by the High Commission in Pretoria, highlights the inflammatory online remarks made by certain segments of South African citizens regarding Nigerians, particularly influenced by the upcoming AFCON semi-final match. These comments include veiled threats against Nigerians and provocative statements related to the match outcome.

In light of this, the High Commission advises Nigerian residents in South Africa to be mindful of their words, choose their viewing venues carefully, especially in public places, and avoid engaging in loud or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles emerge victorious. Furthermore, Nigerians are urged to maintain exemplary conduct, adhere to the law, and report any provocations to the appropriate authorities rather than retaliating.

South Africa has a history marred by incidents of violence and discrimination against foreigners, particularly from other African countries. The advisory serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa during this sensitive time.
