Veteran boxer Michael ‘Ayittey Powers’ Okine has declared that he has not retired from boxing despite his recent ventures into promotion and management. The 43-year-old boxer, known for his distinctive yellow-haired dreadlocks and a professional record of 48 fights (22 wins, 25 losses, and 1 draw), is ready to compete in the light heavyweight division.
During the launch of his promotion outfit, Ayittey Powers Promotion, in Accra last Friday, Powers emphasized his commitment to the sport and his willingness to face any challenger. “I have not hung my gloves, I am now into promotion but I am ready to fight anyone,” he told Graphic Sports.
Powers, celebrated for his trilogy with Braimah Kamoko, also known as Bukom Banku, hinted at a possible surprise appearance in the ring during his promotion’s first event on June 29 at the Bukom Boxing Arena. “Anything is possible; there will be surprises on the night, and I may be on the bill,” he said.
The event, dubbed “Power of the Fist,” promises a thrilling night of boxing with several exciting matchups. Powers vowed to ensure his maiden promotion leaves a lasting legacy for patrons. “Ayittey Powers Promotion, together with my partner Daniel Kofi Ewusie, will ensure the best fighters box, challenge one another, and give the audience their money’s worth,” he stated.
The headline bout of the night will feature a national super middleweight title fight between Ernest Akushey, alias Bahubali, and Elvis Ahorgah, alias Soldier. Their longstanding rivalry, well-known in Bukom and its environs, is expected to culminate in an intense battle.
Another highlight will be the return of Wasiru ‘Dzatabi’ Mohammed, who will face Isaac Dowuona in a 12-round super-featherweight contest. Additionally, a 12-round World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan-African title fight will see Ghana’s Eric Korley take on Adam Hav-Deen Salanon from Benin.
