Azumah Nelson’s son quit boxing after realizing it wasn’t for him, says the boxing legend

Legendary Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson has shared that his son, Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior, decided to leave boxing after realizing it wasn’t suited for “Dada ba” or pampered individuals.

Nelson Junior began his boxing journey at the amateur level in 2017 and trained under Lartekwei Lartey. Despite his initial enthusiasm, he found it challenging to balance boxing with his studies. After graduating from the University of Ghana, he chose to step away from the sport.

Azumah Nelson explained that his son understood the demands of boxing, which include early morning jogs and intense gym sessions. He expressed his support for his son’s decision, acknowledging that boxing requires dedication and toughness, qualities Nelson Junior found challenging to maintain.

The former WBC featherweight champion reflected on his own career, noting that boxing had toughened him. He fought in 47 bouts, winning 39, drawing twice, and losing six times. Azumah Nelson is celebrated as one of Africa’s greatest boxers and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Despite his son’s departure from boxing, Azumah Nelson remains proud of him, emphasizing that boxing is not for everyone and requires a unique mindset and background.
