Renowned British bass guitarist Herbie Flowers passed away on September 5, 2024, at the age of 86. Known for his remarkable contributions to music over a career spanning more than 50 years, Flowers collaborated with iconic artists such as David Bowie, Lou Reed, Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Cat Stevens. His bassline on Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side is perhaps his most famous work, solidifying his place in music history.
Flowers’ musical journey began when he was conscripted into the Royal Air Force in 1956, where he played the tuba, which later influenced his bass playing style. After his military service, he worked as a session musician and played with bands like Blue Mink and T. Rex, contributing to hundreds of hit recordings.
Tributes from fellow musicians and fans have poured in, with many highlighting his vast influence and legacy. David Bowie’s social media pages praised his “incredible musicianship over many decades,” and Mat Osman of Suede reflected on the countless legendary basslines Flowers contributed to.
In his later years, Flowers became a bass teacher and founded two community choirs, continuing to share his passion for music until his passing.
