“Bawumia Says Mahama Avoiding Debate Due to ‘Empty Policies'”

Nalerigu, Ghana – The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of avoiding a potential debate due to fear that his policies will be exposed as inadequate.

Debate Challenge: During a campaign rally in Nalerigu on Wednesday, July 11, Bawumia openly challenged Mahama to a debate, asserting that the former president is reluctant because his proposed policies lack substance.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Dramani Mahama on the economy and governance but I am afraid he is running away from a debate and his people say he doesn’t want to debate. He says he doesn’t want to debate because he knows that I will expose the emptiness of his policies,” Bawumia said.

NDC’s Proposed Policies: Bawumia particularly targeted the NDC’s proposed “24-hour economy” policy, which he described as poorly explained and unfeasible. He criticized Mahama and NDC communicators for struggling to articulate the policy’s details, calling it “as empty as an empty barrel.”

“He says he has a 24-hour economy policy that he cannot explain, it is as empty as an empty barrel. None of his people can explain it and they say they will be exporting lions and elephants,” Bawumia remarked, highlighting the perceived lack of clarity and practicality in Mahama’s proposals.

Campaign Strategy: Despite Mahama’s reluctance to engage in a debate, Bawumia emphasized his commitment to continue campaigning and presenting the NPP’s policies to the Ghanaian public. He expressed confidence that the policies of the NPP would stand up to scrutiny and gain the trust of voters.

“When we meet man-to-man, we can debate and the country will see where our policies lie and that is where we should go, give the country an opportunity to listen to us, but if he chooses not to debate, I will continue to sell my policies to the people of Ghana and you will take the decision,” Bawumia stated.

Implications for the Election: The challenge for a debate and the subsequent refusal could have significant implications for the upcoming elections. Public debates are often seen as opportunities for candidates to clearly present their policies and vision for the country. Bawumia’s accusations of “empty policies” aim to cast doubt on Mahama’s preparedness and policy strength.

Conclusion: As the campaign season heats up, the exchange between Bawumia and Mahama over the potential debate spotlights the ongoing political tension and differing strategies of the NPP and NDC. Bawumia’s focus remains on policy promotion and transparency, hoping to convince the electorate of the NPP’s capability to govern effectively.
