Bayern Munich Clinches 33rd Bundesliga Title After Leverkusen Draws with Freiburg

Bayern Munich has officially secured its 33rd Bundesliga championship, setting a new benchmark in German football history, after Bayer Leverkusen was held to a 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg on Sunday. With two matches still left in the season, Bayern’s title is now mathematically unassailable.

Leverkusen nearly snatched victory when Jonathan Tah scored a dramatic equalizer in injury time with a well-placed header into the far corner at Europa-Park Stadion. However, the late goal was not enough to keep Leverkusen in the title race, allowing Bayern to clinch the trophy.

Bayern had already been on the brink of winning the league on Saturday after staging a stunning comeback against RB Leipzig. Goals from Eric Dier, Michael Olise, and Leroy Sané overturned a 2-0 halftime deficit. But celebrations were briefly postponed when Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen scored a stoppage-time equalizer to make it 3-3.

Despite that draw, Sunday’s result confirmed Bayern’s dominance. Leverkusen, last season’s Bundesliga winner, is now out of contention with just two games remaining. Their 2023–24 title run had marked the only break in Bayern’s grip on the league over the past 13 seasons.

With this victory, Bayern Munich continues its record-breaking legacy. Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, the next most successful clubs in Bundesliga history, have each won five titles since the league’s founding in 1963.

Manager Vincent Kompany, in his debut season after arriving from English side Burnley, has earned praise for keeping Bayern at the top of the table since week three of the campaign.

The triumph is also significant for English striker Harry Kane, who now celebrates his first major trophy at club or international level. After falling short in the Champions League final and twice in European Championship finals with England, Kane finally adds a prestigious team honor to his individual accolades.
