US President Joe Biden commended American forces for their role in assisting Israel in thwarting a significant portion of the drones and missiles launched by Iran on Sunday. He stated that the US had deployed aircraft and warships to the region before the attack occurred, underscoring his condemnation of the assaults in strong terms.
Israel reported that Iran had launched numerous drones and missiles towards it, marking the first direct attack from Iranian territory. While most of these were intercepted, some landed, including at an IDF base, resulting in at least one injury, reportedly a young girl.
Earlier, Iran had warned of retribution for an attack on its consulate in Syria on April 1, which killed seven Iranian officers, including a top commander, though Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.
President Biden affirmed America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security during a call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, praising Israel’s defense against the unprecedented attacks.
Mr Biden announced plans to convene G7 leaders to coordinate a unified diplomatic response to Iran’s aggression. He cautioned Iran against targeting US assets, highlighting America’s readiness to counter any threats, despite Iran not having targeted US assets thus far.
President Biden cut short his visit to Delaware to return to the White House for a briefing by national security officials. The UK’s Royal Air Force is also aiding the region, ready to intercept attacks within range of its existing missions in the Middle East.
