Cairo, Egypt – April 19, 2025
Ghana’s U-20 national football team, the Black Satellites, have departed for Egypt to participate in the upcoming 2025 TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The prestigious youth competition is scheduled to run from April 26 to May 18, 2025, with Ghana eyeing a fifth continental title.
Led by Coach Desmond Ofei, the team is entering the tournament with strong momentum and high expectations, following a successful round of preparations. These included a training camp in Accra and participation in a three-nation tournament in Rabat, Morocco, where the Satellites tested their mettle against some of the continent’s top youth squads.
Ghana has been placed in Group C, where they will face formidable opponents: defending champions Senegal, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic. The competition is expected to be intense, as all teams vie for a spot in the semi-finals.
Beyond continental glory, this year’s U-20 AFCON carries additional weight. The top four teams from the tournament will earn automatic qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.
The Black Satellites are one of Africa’s most decorated youth teams. They have won the U-20 AFCON four times—in 1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021—and made history in 2009 as the first African nation to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup, defeating Brazil in a dramatic final.
As the 2025 tournament nears, Ghana’s young talents are determined to uphold the nation’s proud football heritage and reclaim their place at the top of African youth football.
