In a recent development, the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, announced a decision, joined by seven paramount chiefs in the Bono Region, to sever ties with the Berekum Traditional Council. The move stems from a disagreement over the attendance protocol for the late Berekumhene’s funeral rites, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II.
The disagreement escalated when the Dormaahene insisted on attending the funeral on Thursday, the last day of the rites, contrary to the Berekum Traditional Council’s plan for him to lead the Bono Regional House of Chiefs on Wednesday. The Asantehene was also scheduled to lead the entire Asanteman for the funeral on Thursday, adhering to customary practices.
Anticipating potential clashes due to conflicting schedules, the Berekum Traditional Council sought a High Court injunction against the Dormaahene, a move that was granted. This decision further fueled tensions, with the Dormaahene expressing his dissatisfaction with the legal intervention during a public address in Dormaa Ahenkro.
As a result of these tensions, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, along with the paramount chiefs, announced the suspension of any association with the Berekum Traditional Council. The extent of this suspension remains unclear, raising questions about the involvement of the Berekum area in future House of Chiefs activities and whether a new Berekumhene would be eligible for membership.
This development sheds light on the intricate dynamics of regional traditional councils, emphasizing the importance of cultural protocols and the challenges that arise when differing customs clash.
