Week 8 Recap
Talking the business of sports
Behind a thumping 3-0 victory over Ajax on Wednesday, Liverpool have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League on Matchday 5. Alongside them, Napoli won Group A with a 3-0 victory over Rangers. Group B sees Porto qualify for the round of 16 after a 2-2 draw between Atletico Madrid as Yannick Carrasco’s late penalty was saved by Lukas Hradecky. Atletico had a chance for a rebound to go in but it clashed off the bar as they crashed out.Â
Chaos at the end of the match between Tottenham and Sporting CP saw things finish level as Harry Kane’s 95th-minute winner was ruled out by VAR. Antonio Conte received a red card during the ending moments. Eintracht Frankfurt picked up an important 2-1 victory over Marseille to add to the chaos in Group D.
Matchday 5 has also seen Inter Milan qualify for the last 16 after defeating Viktoria Plzen 4-0. That also means that Barcelona will be in Europa League. In the aftermath of being sent to Europa League, Barcelona lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich as the German side won Group C. Â
Follow along as we have updates from all the matches:
Here are a few takeaways from the matches:
Porto and Liverpool were the only new teams to join the last 16 as 11 spots are now accounted for. The other teams to qualify are Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, Napoli, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Benfica, and Manchester City. It’s not a great season for Spain as Real Madrid are the only Spanish side left in the competition with the elimination of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. This is the fist time since 1998 that only one La Liga team has qualified for the knockout stage.
There were some stunning endings on Wednesday. Tottenham could’ve went into the last 16 with a goal to finish their match against Sporting CP, and they came so so close to getting it. Harry Kane had the ball in the back of the net in the 95th minute but was judged to be offside by essentially a toenail as the game ended at 1-1. Spurs didn’t deserve to win the match after allowing a goal to former player Marcus Edwards but when Conte made changes to throw as much as possible forward, they came close to pulling off the comeback. Spurs are still leading the group, so they control their destiny but they’re missing Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison in attack.Â
Here’s a look at Kane’s chance:

Not to be upstaged, Madrid offered even bigger scenes as after the final whistle was blown, a handball was spotted to give Atletico Madrid a penalty. Carrasco step up to take it but it was saved before Saul’s follow-up crashed into the bar. It was one of the most important penalties that Carrasco will take as well as missing it means that the best Atletico can do is end up in Europa League. Built on their defense in the past, this is a different Atleti team than the one we’re used to.Â

Liverpool are through to the next round and Salah’s six Champions League goals are a reason for it. Getting into open space, Jordan Henderson delivered an amazing pass that Salah was able to flick with his first touch into the goal in a 3-0 win. When Liverpool are given space to run, they can still make teams pay and did just that in Amsterdam.Â

Crazy scenes in both Madrid and London, with Atletico Madrid that drew after they missed a last minute penalty that was given after the final whistle of the referee thanks to the VAR. In London, Spurs drew after they saw the goal of Kane disallowed. What an ending!Â

Napoli are ahead at the Stadio Maradona against Rangers. Di Lorenzo finds the Argentinian striker inside the box who doesn’t miss it and scores the opening goal of the night in Naples.Â
After being confirmed by a VAR review, Mane has slipped past the Barcelona defense. Already making a bad day at Camp Nou a worse one.
