Accra — April 15, 2025:
The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, Mohammed Zakou, who was arrested for allegedly publishing false information about the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Mr. Zakou was taken into custody after a Facebook post on April 12, 2025, in which he wrote: “Rest well, Her Excellency,” despite official clarification from the government that the Vice President was only unwell, not deceased.
Following his arrest, Zakou was charged with the offence of communicating false news.
A prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) informed the court that the accused had admitted to making the post but explained it was intended as a message of goodwill, not to mislead the public.
Appearing in court on Monday, Zakou’s counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo, petitioned for his client’s release on bail, arguing that the post was misinterpreted and that Zakou posed no flight risk.
The presiding judge granted the bail request, setting the amount at GH¢100,000 with two sureties. As part of the bail conditions, Zakou must report to the assigned investigator once a week until further notice.
The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC).
