Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have officially ended their strike and returned to full operations after a meeting with the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) had suspended their services on April 23, 2025, following tensions that arose during the Minister’s visit to the facility. During the visit, DATTH members highlighted persistent operational challenges impacting healthcare delivery at TTH.
The strike had disrupted both emergency and routine medical services, creating significant challenges for patients.
In response to the crisis, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and a delegation sent by the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, engaged in mediation efforts with DATTH leadership to find a resolution.
After consultations with the National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), partial emergency services were restored at TTH by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Later that day, the GMA facilitated a crucial meeting between DATTH executives and the Minister of Health. During the discussions, Mr. Akandoh expressed regret over the longstanding issues affecting the hospital and the events that led to the strike. He assured the doctors that efforts were underway to supply the hospital with critical medical equipment and resources to improve service delivery.
Following the meeting, DATTH held an emergency assembly on April 26, 2025, during which they unanimously agreed to call off the strike and directed all doctors to resume full duties immediately.
In a statement, the Association emphasized its commitment to continued engagement with hospital management, the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to address persistent operational challenges. They also urged hospital authorities to maintain transparency with the public about the institution’s difficulties.
Additionally, DATTH appealed to the media to report on health issues responsibly and warned that if logistical and equipment problems persist in the near future, they might be compelled to take further action.
The Association acknowledged the important role played by His Majesty Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II in facilitating the peaceful resolution of the standoff and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing healthcare delivery at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
