Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reiterated the party’s dedication to advancing Ghanaian education during the 63rd Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Saturday, December 31.
One of the central points of Dr. Bawumia’s address was the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has become a cornerstone of the NPP’s commitment to educational progress. He highlighted the policy’s achievements, noting a substantial increase in enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million students in seven years, with a particular emphasis on achieving gender parity in enrollment.
Despite initial skepticism and doubts about the feasibility of Free SHS, Dr. Bawumia underscored its demonstrable impact on improving access to education. Celebrating the policy’s success, he pointed to record pass rates in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where nearly 70% of students achieved success. Dr. Bawumia commended the hard work of both students and teachers in achieving these milestones.
In a comparative analysis, Dr. Bawumia contrasted the NPP’s record with the previous administration. He specifically highlighted the reinstatement of allowances for teacher trainees, nursing trainees, and Arabic instructors, which had been discontinued under the previous government. Additionally, he emphasized the NPP’s introduction of free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), expanding educational opportunities for a broader spectrum of students.
Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the NPP’s capability to manage and enhance Ghana’s education system. He asserted, “Our proven track record and commitment to investing in education demonstrate that the NPP can be trusted with the future of our children’s education,” while also emphasizing the party’s commitment to safeguarding educational advancements from political ambitions.
