Edwin van der Sar has dismissed the possibility of making an imminent return to Manchester United, claiming that he still has unfinished business at Ajax. The Dutch goalkeeper spent six successful seasons at Old Trafford before retiring in 2011.
After a year out from the game, Van der Sar began working as Ajax’s marketing director and was promoted to his current role of CEO back in 2016.
The 51-year-old has had a lot of success at Ajax, where he worked closely with former manager Erik ten Hag to build two teams that have dominated Dutch football in recent years.
This year, he was involved in Ten Hag’s move to his former club, as well as the transfers of Antony and Lisandro Martinez to Old Trafford.
Van der Sar has long been linked with a return to United in a similar executive role, and it was just this week that fresh reports linked the legendary goalkeeper with a move back to the club.
However, the Dutch great has dismissed those claims and insists he still has plenty of work to do at Ajax. “It’s never been that close,” he told The Times of reoccurring links with a return to United. “I have a good relationship with the board and I had a fantastic six years in Manchester, but I’m not finished here yet.”
