End of the Road: Ghana Black Stars Part Ways with Coach Chris Hughton After AFCON 2023 Heartbreak

Ghana Black Stars Head Coach, Chris Hughton, Relieved of Duties After Disappointing AFCON 2023 Performance

The Ghana Football Association has officially announced the dismissal of Chris Hughton from his position as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars following their underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement was made through a statement on the association’s website, stating, “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.”

The statement also revealed that the technical team of the Black Stars has been dissolved, and the GFA will soon provide a roadmap for the future direction of the national team.

A brief timeline of events leading to Chris Hughton’s dismissal:

  • February 2023: Chris Hughton appointed as the head coach of the Black Stars.
  • March-June 2023: Hughton successfully leads Ghana to AFCON qualification.
  • June-July 2023: Disappointing performance at AFCON results in an early exit for the national team.
  • October 2023: Reports surface about the Ghana Football Association considering the possibility of sacking Hughton.
  • January 2024: Chris Hughton officially dismissed as the head coach of the Black Stars.

The GFA’s decision comes in the wake of growing dissatisfaction with Hughton’s leadership, particularly after the team’s unexpected early exit from AFCON 2023. The association aims to chart a new course for the Black Stars, and further details on the future plans for the national team will be communicated in the coming days.
