Former President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Koroma, has been charged with treason, misprision of treason, and two counts of harboring suspects in connection with an alleged failed coup attempt. The charges were formally presented before a Magistrate Court, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape.
Following the charges, the High Court granted bail to Mr. Koroma under specific and stringent conditions. These conditions include limiting the number of individuals at his residence to a maximum of 10 people at any given time. This group is restricted to his wife, children, lawyers, and members of his political party. Notably, the judge emphasized that any visit to his residence must be explicitly permitted by the Inspector-General of Police.
Furthermore, the former president is prohibited from leaving his house without the express permission of the Inspector-General of Police. The conditions of bail also specify that only the National Chairman and National Deputy Chairman of his political party are authorized to visit him during this period.
Two sureties, both senior citizens residing in the Western Area of Sierra Leone, were mandated to guarantee Mr. Koroma’s bail. These conditions aim to ensure that the former president complies with legal proceedings while maintaining public order and safety.
Chernor Bah, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, confirmed the court’s decision and outlined the conditions of bail. According to Bah, the government is prepared to commence the trial on January 17, with the expectation of presenting witnesses to support the charges against the former president.
