A State University at Fredonia group will travel to Honduras in January to conduct medical brigades in rural villages.
The students will work with Honduran doctors, nurses, interpreters, and a pharmacist to provide primary medical care and medicines at one day medical brigades. A fundraiser for medicine and medical supplies will be held at the 21 Brix Winery on Friday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a silent auction of donated art items, mostly ceramics, at the event.
There will also be an pottery sale fundraiser at the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a fundraising table to raise money for medicine and supplies.
The goal is to raise money to purchase over the counter and prescription medicine for the brigades. All services are provided free of charge to the Hondurans who come to the brigades. In the rural communities people do not have access to regular medical care and they can obtain vitamins, anti-inflammatory medicine, and dental supplies at the brigade in addition to prescription medicines to treat chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
In addition to providing medical service, the program has impacted students who have participated in past years. The students are mentored by the Honduran hosts and doctors and get to observe daily life that is very different from what they have experienced. The students also interact with children at a local orphanage and they stay connected with the children after they return to the States.
Tickets for the fundraiser, which will be catered by Dupers, are $30. To purchase tickets, make donations, or obtain more information, see the program’s Facebook page (FredoniaHondurasMedical) or contact the program coordinator, Biology professor Dr. Ted Lee (leew@fredonia.edu).
