Ghana Government Clears Salary Arrears for Black Stars Coaching Staff

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has settled all outstanding salary arrears owed to both current and former coaches of the national football team, the Black Stars. These payments address obligations that have been pending since 2020.

This action comes after a thorough audit and coordinated effort spearheaded by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams, resulting in the full disbursement of unpaid salaries to past and present coaching personnel.

Among the beneficiaries is former head coach CK Akonnor, who led the team from January 2020 to September 2021. He received $120,000, the highest amount among the recipients. His assistant, David Duncan, was paid $40,000.

Chris Hughton, dismissed after Ghana’s underwhelming showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d’Ivoire (played in January 2024), received $68,904 for unpaid wages and signing fees. His assistants, George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, were also compensated with $20,833 and $12,500, respectively, for outstanding sign-on bonuses.

The current coaching team, headed by Otto Addo since March 2024, had gone unpaid since October 2024. They have now received six months’ worth of salaries through March 2025. Addo, who is in his second term as head coach, received over $420,000. His support staff were also paid: Joseph Laumann ($75,000), John Paintsil ($64,864), goalkeeping coach Fatau Dauda ($19,459), and Team Coordinator Francis Bugri Tampuli ($33,000). However, salaries for April and May 2025 remain unpaid.

Maxwell Konadu, who served as assistant to Milovan Rajevac from September 2021 to January 2022, also received $30,000 in back pay.

While the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is responsible for hiring the coaching staff, the financial obligations fall to the government, which had previously struggled to fulfill these commitments.
