Ghanaian Parliament Approves Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Rights activists have strongly criticized a new law passed by Ghana’s parliament that targets LGBTQ individuals and advocates, imposing severe penalties including imprisonment.

The legislation, titled the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values” bill, was sponsored by a coalition of religious and traditional leaders and received significant support from lawmakers. If validated by the president, the bill would criminalize LGBTQ sexual acts and the promotion of LGBTQ rights, with offenders facing imprisonment.

Despite existing laws against gay sex in Ghana, discrimination against LGBTQ individuals is widespread and no prosecutions have been reported under the current legislation. The new bill, however, introduces harsher penalties, with imprisonment ranging from six months to three years for engaging in LGBTQ sexual acts, and three to five years for promoting LGBTQ activities.

President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government has indicated support for the bill, with Akufo-Addo asserting that gay marriage will not be allowed during his tenure. The bill’s passage has sparked outrage among human rights groups, who argue that it violates fundamental human rights and promotes discrimination.

Opposition lawmaker Sam George, a key proponent of the bill, has urged Akufo-Addo to sign it into law, claiming it is the most effective way to address LGBTQ issues in the country. However, activists warn that the bill will further marginalize and endanger LGBTQ individuals in Ghana, creating an environment of fear and persecution.

The bill’s fate now rests with President Akufo-Addo, who must decide whether to assent to or reject the legislation.
