The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025.
The fare reduction was agreed upon during a meeting between GPRTU’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport. Speaking to 3news, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the decision.
“We’ve concluded discussions with the Minister of Transport and agreed to implement a 15% reduction in fares from May 25,” he said.
The move comes in response to a recent decline in fuel prices, which have dropped by 18%. Although the Union typically adjusts fares based on a third of any fuel price decrease, this time they’ve chosen a more generous cut to offer some relief to commuters.
“Usually, we adjust fares by one-third of the fuel price reduction, but in light of the current trend, we’ve decided to go with a 15% cut,” Moro explained. “We also encourage those in the spare parts industry to reduce their prices accordingly.”
He emphasized that the fare reduction was made without waiting for decreases in other cost components. Moro also warned that GPRTU members who fail to comply with the new pricing directive will face disciplinary action.
“When the Union makes a decision, it is binding. Members must follow through or face the consequences,” he added.
