Five incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Ashanti Region have opted out of the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27, 2024. Notably, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Wusu (MP for Bekwai), Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, and the legislators representing Oforikrom, Ahafo Ano South East, and Kwabre East constituencies have chosen not to file their nominations for the primaries.
The Ashanti Region, known for having the highest number of parliamentarians, particularly those aligned with the NPP, is witnessing significant political shifts as 43 out of the 47 seats are currently held by the governing party.
In the Old Tafo Constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah is set to contend with Dr. Serwaa Donkor, aiming to become the first female Member of Parliament for the constituency. Dr. Donkor, having come second in the 2020 primaries, is confident that it is her time to serve the people of Old Tafo and Pankrono, emphasizing her understanding of development and leadership.
Vincent Frimpong Manu is making his third appearance for the Kwadaso seat, facing a fierce contest with the incumbent MP, Kingsley Nyarko. Manu stresses the need for a true resident born and bred in Kwadaso to bring about the change the people need.
The Bantama constituency witnesses a tough competition between incumbent MP Francis Asenso Boakye and Raphael Agyapong. Asenso Boakye highlights his works in the constituency, while Agyapong believes he will be crowned the winner.
In the Kwabre East Constituency, five aspirants are vying for the seat after the incumbent MP, Francisca Oteng Mensah, declared her intention to opt-out. Patrick Amoako Kufour is optimistic about victory, facing strong competition from the former organizer and the Municipal Chief Executive of the constituency.
While the filing of nominations marks the initial step, the aspirants must now focus on winning the trust and support of the delegates to secure their parliamentary candidature on January 27, 2024.
