On Monday, Israel’s parliament passed a new law allowing the temporary shutdown of foreign media outlets in Israel, with Al Jazeera being a primary target. This law authorizes the closure of foreign media bureaus for up to 45 days, with the possibility of extension. The law remains in effect until the end of July or until significant military operations in Gaza conclude. Additionally, it permits the confiscation of equipment if deemed a security threat.
Netanyahu has reiterated his intention to shut down Al Jazeera, stating, “Al Jazeera harmed Israel’s security, actively participated in the October 7 massacre, and incited against Israeli soldiers.” He emphasized his commitment to using the new law to cease the channel’s operations in Israel.
Historical Threats and Actions Against Al Jazeera
July 26, 2017: Netanyahu threatened to shut down Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem office, accusing the network of inciting violence amid tensions over the al-Aqsa Mosque. He made these accusations in a Facebook post, reflecting the ongoing friction between Israeli authorities and Al Jazeera.
March 12, 2008: The Israeli government press office sanctioned Al Jazeera staff after the network covered celebrations following the release of Samir Kuntar from Israeli prison. Kuntar, a Lebanese Druze and member of the Palestinian Liberation Front and Hezbollah, had been convicted of serious crimes.
May 15, 2021: An Israeli missile destroyed the al-Jalaa Tower in Gaza City, which housed the offices of Al Jazeera and The Associated Press, along with numerous residences. This attack highlighted the physical risks faced by Al Jazeera journalists in conflict zones.
