Japan Reaffirms Support for Volivo Bridge Construction.

Japan has reiterated its strong interest in supporting the development of a bridge across the Volta Lake at Volivo—an essential component of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road network.

During a meeting with President John Mahama on Tuesday, Miyazaki Katsura, Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), expressed Japan’s commitment to financing the project.

The planned Volivo Bridge is a major part of President Mahama’s ambitious “$10 billion Big Push” infrastructure plan, which aims to boost the nation’s development by investing in critical sectors. As part of the initiative outlined in the 2025 budget, the government intends to allocate $2 billion annually over five years to projects including roads, bridges, healthcare, and education.

Katsura welcomed the inclusion of the Volivo Bridge under the Big Push program, emphasizing JICA’s readiness to continue coordinating with the Japanese government on the project. He also mentioned that a technical delegation would soon travel to Ghana to evaluate the remaining financial needs for the bridge.

President Mahama had previously secured Japan’s interest in the project during an earlier visit to Tokyo while in office.

Additionally, the President accepted an invitation to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August, where he plans to hold further discussions with Japanese officials to advance the funding process.
