Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful within Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised allegations that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made assurances to seven Ashanti Regional Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding the vice presidential slot.
Mr. Agyapong made these assertions during a radio interview with US-based Kings Radio on September 24, 2023. In his statement, he expressed concerns that if Dr. Bawumia were to become the NPP’s flagbearer, it could potentially lead the party into the opposition.
Agyapong stated, “What they are doing in the Ashanti Region is concerning. Forty-seven MPs have been influenced, all in pursuit of a single vice presidential position. They have reportedly promised the vice presidential slots to 7 of the Ashanti Regional MPs, and this race for the position is causing internal divisions because of its significance.”
He continued, “With 17 contenders vying for one vice presidential slot, it is clear that they are willing to go to great lengths to secure it. However, I believe that this intense internal competition could lead us to an electoral loss, especially against an opponent like Mahama. Despite all the talk, it seems unlikely that the vice president can outperform Mahama. Yet, driven by greed and self-interest, some within the party seem willing to risk our chances of victory and push us into opposition. I am determined to resist that and ensure we do not end up in the opposition.”
Kennedy Agyapong is set to compete for the flagbearership position alongside three other contenders: Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh. The NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, as the date for the election to determine the successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the leader of the party. This internal competition within the NPP holds significant implications for the party’s future direction and its prospects in the upcoming elections.
Summary: Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent figure in Ghana’s NPP, has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of promising the vice presidential slot to seven Ashanti Regional MPs. This claim comes as the NPP gears up for internal elections to select a new leader. Agyapong expressed concerns that such intense competition for the position could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for unity within the party. This development adds complexity to the NPP’s internal dynamics and its future direction.
