The OSAA volleyball and soccer state playoffs are in full swing.
Here is a list of Saturday’s playoff matches. Check back here throughout the evening for final scores across the state.
KEIZER — No. 9 Sprague defeated No. 8 McNary, 3-1 (25-16, 13-25, 25-20, 25-22) in a round two playoff match in the Class 6A state volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon.
“This is our fourth time playing them (this season), and we felt pretty confident,” Olys’ head coach Anne Olsen said. “We studied them, we knew them very well and it just makes me so excited that the girls showed up to play.”
The Olys wasted no time taking the first set, but quickly ran into trouble when the Celtics jumped to a 20-9 lead in the second set.
With the match tied 1-1, the Celtics kept things exciting by trailing close behind, before the Olys ran away with straight set victories.
“It’s going to be interesting to see,” Olsen said heading into the quarterfinals. “Jesuit has had some sets taken off, so they are not as strong as they used to be. South Salem has been on a run recently, they beat us last week in conference play.”
Sprague secured a spot in the state quarterfinals, where they will face No. 1 Jesuit at Forest Grove High School on Friday at 8 a.m.
With 42 second left in the match, McNary was awarded a penalty kick for a handball against a Clackamas’ player.
Hudson Brunk stood there waiting as the clock was adjusted to the correct time, and with one fell swoop he connected to lift McNary to a 3-2 first-round playoff victory over Clackamas on Saturday night.
“I’m usually composed in those scenarios,” Brunk said. “But with so much time, it started getting to my head. I ended up smashing it as hard as I could and hoping for the best.”
The Celtics trained 1-0 early in the first half after Clackamas connected on a center kick.
The Celtics then flipped the script in the second half first with a goal from Ryder Allen, and seven minutes later Brunk netted a goal from close range to give McNary a 2-1 lead.
Clackamas tied it on a goal from Landon Rasmussen with 11 minutes remaining in the game, but Celtics had other plans.
McNary will face No. 12 Gresham (11-2-2, 6-1) in the second round at home on Tuesday.
