Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram is open to the idea of discussing a move to a new club in 2023, with Liverpool among the favourites to sign him, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The France striker is one of the hottest properties in the Bundesliga after scoring 13 times in just 17 appearances this season. And with his contract with Die Fohlen due to expire at the end of the season, the race for his signature is hotting up.
Indeed, Thuram – the son of legendary World Cup winner, Lilian – first attracted the attentions of Bayern Munich. The reigning Bundesliga champions are in the market for a new centre forward, having never really replaced Robert Lewandowski over the summer.
And while Eric Maxime Choupo-Moting has been in the goals, the experienced forward is also out of contract come the summer. Indeed, at eight years younger, Thuram would represent a perfect addition to their attack.
However, Bayern are officially unable to negotiate with Thuram directly until the summer when his contract expires. They can, of course, look to formally strike a deal with Gladbach, though, if they can agree on a deal.
As such, Thuram is also being linked with a move to the Premier League too. Unlike Bayern, Premier League sides are allowed to open talks over a pre-contract move from January 1.
To that end, reports last week suggested long-term suitors Arsenal were looking into a possible swoop.
The 25-year-old is also reportedly on Aston Villa’s radar too. New manager Unai Emery is looking for some big-name signings to take his new club to the next level. He has started brightly at Villa Park with successive wins and on Monday has been linked with a triple raid on LaLiga. There is a belief that Thuram is also on his list of targets.
However, Monday’s Transfer Gossip, citing reports in Germany, claim Liverpool are also in the mix.
Jurgen Klopp is looking for a potential long-term replacement for Roberto Firmino and Thuram may fit the bill. And while Liverpool are also looking to extend the Brazilian’s contract, a move to sign Thuram cannot be ruled out.
That’s certainly a scenario Fabrizio Romano can forsee.
The trusted transfer guru insists the race to sign Thuram on a free is wide open. And he also believes the player is considering all options at this stage.
“I think there will be many rumours around Thuram as he’s good player available as potential free agent in the summer,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“I’m told he could really leave on a free transfer, so he’ll consider all options in the next months.”
Thuram has scored 41 goals in 119 appearances since signing for Gladbach from Guigamp in Ligue 1. Thuram is a tough attacker, who is hard to knock off the ball and likes bringing others into play. Capped four times by France, Thuram has a total of 65 career goals over 272 appearances.
