President John Dramani Mahama has announced impressive strides in the implementation of his flagship 24-hour economy policy, fulfilling a major campaign promise within his first 120 days in office.
Speaking during a national address, President Mahama highlighted the swift rollout of the policy, which aims to transform Ghana’s economy through round-the-clock operations across key sectors.
“We promised to begin drafting the necessary legal frameworks and prepare for implementation within the first 120 days – and we have delivered on that promise,” Mahama affirmed.
According to the President, Cabinet has approved essential amendments to both the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act and the Labour Act, laying the legal foundation to support the new economic model.
“These amendments are designed to enhance social protection, foster a business-friendly environment for the 24-hour economy, and promote harmonious labour relations,” he explained.
Several government agencies have already adopted 24-hour services with noticeable impacts.
President Mahama noted that the policy is also unlocking job opportunities.
“The Youth Employment Agency is preparing to launch the Graduate Corporate Support Program, attaching 20,000 graduates to companies operating 24 hours,” he announced.
Recognizing security as crucial for night-time economic activities, Mahama revealed plans for a dedicated 24-hour police unit to improve night patrols and integrate technology into policing.
He further disclosed that the Energy Ministry is collaborating with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to establish smart metering and time-of-use tariffs, offering lower electricity rates during off-peak hours as an incentive for businesses adopting the 24-hour model.
“Already, many businesses are eager to join this policy,” Mahama stated. “We’re creating pathways for sustainable job creation, empowering the private sector, and expanding opportunities for our youth.”
Looking ahead, President Mahama emphasized that the 24-hour economy will drive structural transformation across agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and other key sectors, positioning Ghana for inclusive and sustainable growth.
