The Mass Media Public Education campaign in Accra, recently initiated with a strong focus on maintaining a clean city during the Homowo festival and throughout the year, has gained significant traction. This campaign emphasizes the importance of cleanliness and environmental stewardship among the residents of Accra. On the second day of the Homowo Clean-up Exercise, the initiative unfolded in a powerful display of leadership and community involvement.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, demonstrated exemplary leadership by participating actively in the clean-up efforts despite the rain. His commitment and dedication to the cause were evident as he cleaned the streets, setting a precedent and inspiring residents to follow suit. This act of leading by example resonated with the community, encouraging more people to join the clean-up exercise and take responsibility for their surroundings.
Supporting this initiative was Major G.G. Klu Amedekar from the Ghana Armed Forces Technical Assistant Team on Sanitation. His leadership and coordination were instrumental in mobilizing resources and volunteers for the clean-up efforts. The presence of the armed forces underscored the seriousness of the campaign and added a layer of discipline and efficiency to the exercise.
At Akoto Lantey, also known as the London market area of Accra, the clean-up efforts saw a significant turnout. Residents were encouraged to participate alongside the soldiers, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Accra Mayor, and officials from Zoomlion, a leading waste management company. Despite the inclement weather, the teams braved the rain to ensure the continuity of the ‘Clean to Celebrate’ initiative.
This collective effort aimed at making Accra shine during the Homowo festival and beyond highlighted the importance of community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. The campaign not only focused on immediate clean-up activities but also sought to instill a sense of long-term responsibility and pride among the residents. By involving local leaders and authorities, the initiative aimed to create a sustainable impact, ensuring that the message of cleanliness and environmental care was effectively communicated and embraced by the community.
The Mass Media Public Education campaign in Accra is a testament to the power of collective action and leadership in addressing urban sanitation challenges. As the clean-up exercise progresses, it is hoped that the enthusiasm and commitment displayed by the leaders and residents will continue to inspire others, fostering a culture of cleanliness and environmental consciousness throughout the city.
