Experienced Ghana Premier League coach J.E.A. Sarpong has raised alarms about the potential consequences of the mass exodus of players at Asante Kotoko. The club has recently parted ways with over 20 players and is set to introduce 14 new additions to their squad.
This significant turnover comes after a disappointing season where the Porcupines finished sixth in the domestic top-flight. Sarpong expressed his concerns about the lack of stability resulting from such aggressive transfer policies, suggesting that it could lead the club to relegation.
“It will affect the team. They’ve been sacking players every season. Where is the stability?” Sarpong questioned in an interview with Mothers FM.
He highlighted the struggles faced by the team under coach Ogum, who had previously dismissed eleven players and brought in eleven new ones, only for the team to continue struggling. Sarpong emphasized the importance of maintaining a core group of experienced players to ensure stability and performance.
He cited the example of Amankona, a player who was acquired from Chelsea to Kotoko for his scoring abilities, but returned to Berekum to win the golden boot. This, according to Sarpong, indicates underlying issues within the club’s management and strategy. “They will go to relegation if they don’t take care,” he added.
In their efforts to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season, Kotoko is targeting players including Bofoakwa Tano captain Saaka Dauda.
