Western Region, Ghana — April 15, 2025:
In a decisive operation, the Ghana Armed Forces have stormed and demolished an illegal settlement known as Abrewa Ne Nkran, a hidden community believed to house more than 10,000 residents involved in a range of unlawful activities.
The enclave, located deep within the forest reserves of the Western Region, was reportedly established by both Ghanaian and foreign nationals engaged in illegal gold mining — locally referred to as galamsey. The settlement had no formal recognition in national records and lacked access to basic social amenities.
Beyond its reputation for illegal mining, security sources revealed the community had become a hub for various criminal activities including human trafficking, child abuse, prostitution, and money laundering.
According to reports gathered by JoyNews, a significant number of the settlement’s inhabitants are believed to be migrants from neighboring West African countries, all of whom were active participants in the illicit mining trade.
The military’s swift action forms part of the government’s intensified clampdown on illegal mining and its associated crimes, which have long threatened both Ghana’s environment and security.
Authorities believe dismantling the settlement will send a strong signal to other illegal mining communities and foreign operatives engaged in unsanctioned activities within Ghana’s borders.
Further investigations are underway, and law enforcement agencies have promised to bring perpetrators of related crimes to justice.
