Minister Henry Quartey Issues Warning to Immigration Officials at Kotoka International Airport

The Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, has issued a stern warning to immigration personnel stationed at Kotoka International Airport, cautioning them against engaging in acts of favoritism. He urged officers not to misuse their authority by facilitating the passage of their relatives or acquaintances through security checkpoints.

Speaking to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Accra on April 4, 2024, Minister Quartey emphasized the detrimental effects of such behavior on travel procedures, highlighting the potential for disciplinary actions to be taken against offenders.

Minister Quartey underscored the gravity of aiding family members and friends in circumventing immigration processes, particularly when officers are off-duty or stationed outside the capital city of Accra. He emphasized the legal consequences faced by personnel who assist others in carrying luggage, warning that they could be implicated as accomplices if illicit items are discovered.

During his visit to the GIS headquarters, Minister Quartey took the opportunity to acquaint himself with the service’s operations, particularly in light of the upcoming general elections. He urged staff members to uphold impartiality and professionalism, prioritizing national interests over partisan affiliations.

Acknowledging the challenges confronting the GIS, including logistical constraints and accommodation issues, Minister Quartey reassured personnel of the government’s commitment to addressing these concerns pragmatically. He underscored the necessity of equipping the service adequately to enhance border security, facilitate trade, and promote national development.

Echoing Minister Quartey’s sentiments, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kwame Asuah Takyi, affirmed the service’s preparedness to safeguard Ghana’s borders. However, he called for additional support in terms of retooling efforts and the establishment of additional checkpoints to counter irregular migration through unauthorized routes.
