“GOC Presses Ministry for GHȻ1m Debt Repayment”. The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is demanding immediate reimbursement of over GHȻ1 million owed to them by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, dating back more than a decade. Despite persistent reminders from the current GOC leadership, the debt, which originated as a loan from the GOC to the ministry, remains unpaid.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah expressed frustration over the ministry’s failure to repay the loan, stating, “Sometimes, I feel like giving up on the chase for the repayment of the loan because of the futile attempt at persuading the ministry to repay them.”
Additionally, Nunoo Mensah revealed that the ministry owes the GOC for various expenses, including athlete trips and other costs, further exacerbating the financial strain. He highlighted instances such as the GOC covering expenses for the Bombers’ trip to Italy at the ministry’s request.
While the GOC shares an interest in supporting national teams, Nunoo Mensah emphasized that it is the ministry’s responsibility to fund such activities. He challenged the ministry to allocate funds to other federations besides the Black Stars, as the burden on the GOC is becoming unsustainable.
Despite these challenges, Nunoo Mensah expressed a willingness to collaborate with the government in funding athlete activities. However, he stressed that the GOC cannot bear all the responsibilities alone when it is the ministry’s duty to seek financial support for athletes.
