According to one of African football’s top officials, Morocco’s success in becoming the first
African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals can “galvanise” the continent.
The Atlas Lions made history by defeating Portugal 1-0 on Saturday, and will now face
defending champions France in the final four in Qatar on Wednesday (19:00 GMT).
However, Veron Mosengo-Omba, the general secretary of the Confederation of African Football
(CAF), believes that more investment and resources are needed for other countries to match the
North Africans’ achievements.
Although Morocco’s squad includes several foreign-born players, a large part of their success can
be attributed to the team’s overwhelming emotional and financial support from the country’s
football federation (FMRF).
