MP Atta Akyea Rejects Sole Blame for Ghana’s Economic Woes

Member of Parliament for the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, defended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia against sole attribution of Ghana’s economic challenges. Atta Akyea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia faced significant limitations as Vice President and could not independently implement his ideas to address the economic downturn.

During an interview on Citi TV on Tuesday, January 16, the former Works and Housing Minister clarified that crucial decisions on government policies rested with the President, not Dr. Bawumia. Atta Akyea praised Dr. Bawumia as a distinguished individual with the resilience to effectively serve the nation.

He expressed confidence that if elected president on December 7, Dr. Bawumia would implement his ideas for the betterment of Ghanaians. Atta Akyea drew an analogy, stating that blaming Dr. Bawumia for Ghana’s economic challenges would be like assigning a toothache to a carpenter instead of a dentist.

Highlighting Dr. Bawumia’s role in the Economic Management Team,he acknowledged the ongoing economic challenges but insisted that placing all the blame on Dr. Bawumia was unjust and akin to “cruel and vile propaganda.” He suggested that the nation would be in safer hands under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, given his expertise and past roles in addressing economic issues. Ghana, currently facing economic difficulties, sought assistance from the International Monetary Fund for a bailout.

Despite criticisms directed at Dr. Bawumia for the economic challenges, Atta Akyea urged a more nuanced perspective, emphasizing the limitations of the Vice President’s role in implementing policies. He discouraged assigning all economic woes solely to Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the collaborative nature of government decision-making.
