Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, expressed concern over the scarcity of individuals willing to challenge authority and speak truth to power.
During the 10th anniversary of the Alaigbo Development Foundation in Umuahia, Abia State, Obi lamented the prevalence of sycophants who merely tell leaders what they want to hear. The former Anambra State Governor highlighted the importance of responsibly managing public funds, as he did during his tenure.
Obi criticized the rampant greed and relentless pursuit of wealth among public office holders, which he blamed for many of Nigeria’s issues. He urged Nigerians to speak truth to power and reject the culture of hero worship.
“What we lack in Nigeria are people who can tell you when you are wrong. Leaders must listen to the people because it is the people who put them in office,” Obi asserted. “Leaders must use public money for public purposes.”
Obi recounted his time in public office, emphasizing that he utilized public funds for the benefit of the people, left no debts, and saved $150 million for the state. He called for continued prayers for leaders to serve the people with integrity and fear of God.
Obi also advocated for a more significant role for traditional institutions and urged the government to collaborate with socio-cultural organizations for societal development. He encouraged the Alaigbo Development Foundation to continue its advocacy for the advancement of the Igbo nation and unity among Ndigbo.
Professor Uzodinma Nwala, the pioneer President of ADF, stated that the foundation aims to unite Igbo stakeholders for the development of Alaigbo. The new national President of ADF, Nze Coleman Emeka Chukudelunzu, echoed the call for unity among Ndigbo to rebuild Igbo land.
Maj General Chris Eze (retd.), the event’s chairman, praised the resilience of Ndigbo in overcoming the challenges of the civil war. The two-day event included the inauguration of ADF’s new national leadership and the celebration of its anniversary with a cake-cutting ceremony.
