NPP’s Salam Mustapha Warns Future NPP Government Will Remove Mahama-Appointed Chief Justice

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has issued a strong warning that any Chief Justice appointed under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration could face removal by a future NPP government.

Mustapha’s remarks come in response to the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, a decision he criticized as undermining the independence of the judiciary and fueling political interference.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 3, Mustapha labeled the suspension as a “crude” tactic, questioning its motive and fairness.

“Whether President Mahama is seeking a third term or not, this is a crude way to handle the situation,” Mustapha asserted, implying the move was more politically driven than constitutionally justified.

He cautioned that politicizing the judiciary risks making the office of the Chief Justice dependent on the ruling party’s interests, thereby threatening the impartiality of Ghana’s judicial system.

“What you are essentially doing is making the office of the Chief Justice aligned with whichever party is in power,” he explained. “That’s dangerous for judicial independence.”

Mustapha did not shy away from promising retaliatory measures if the suspension results in the Chief Justice’s removal.

“If this suspension leads to her dismissal, and someone else is appointed, by the grace of God, anytime we return to office, we will also remove any Chief Justice you install,” he declared.

His comments have sparked renewed debate over the separation of powers, judicial independence, and the implications of political influence over key state institutions.
