An off-duty officer from the Ghana Police Service has been detained following the alleged shooting of Stanley Ahadzi at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18, 2024, reportedly stemming from a disagreement over a taxi fare.
General Constable Smith Gyeke, who was driving the taxi, is accused of being involved in the confrontation that led to the shooting. According to a police statement issued on Monday, August 19, 2024, by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the victim’s remains have been taken to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and an autopsy.
Constable Gyeke is currently being held in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the matter.
The statement also highlighted that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, along with the Police Management Board, visited the bereaved family. They assured the family that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action would be taken against the suspect.
