Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has once again criticized former President John Mahama for the frequent power outages that occurred during his administration, jokingly referring to the phenomenon as “dum dum.” He made these comments during a sitting of Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee on May 3, 2024, amidst renewed concerns about electricity supply problems in Ghana.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated that Ghana has moved past the era of long periods of power outages experienced during Mahama’s tenure. He emphasized that the current situation, which he described as “dum sie sie,” is different from the “dumsor” experienced under Mahama. According to him, “dumsor” under Mahama was characterized by inadequate power supply, resulting in frequent and prolonged outages, whereas “dum sie sie” implies planned outages for maintenance purposes.
The Minister highlighted that during Mahama’s presidency, erratic power supply was a major issue, unlike the current situation where outages are planned to facilitate maintenance work. He emphasized that Mahama’s administration was the only one where such prolonged and severe power outages occurred, lasting for four years.
