At a national stakeholder dialogue series in Cape Coast, the Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address the various challenges facing the country. He specifically highlighted the escalating unemployment rate as a security threat and called for “outside the box” strategies in public sector reforms to tackle these issues.
The meeting, held under the theme “Taking stock and identifying emerging issues to shape Ghana’s new public sector reform strategy, 2025-2030,” marked the first phase of the series. Participants reviewed the progress made from the previous strategy, identified bottlenecks, and proposed suggestions for a new strategy.
Mr. Osafo-Maafo also urged for practical measures to revitalize the agricultural sector, making it more appealing and profitable for the youth. He suggested a shift from the current reliance on certain commodities to the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, along with the establishment of land banks.
Regarding unemployment, Mr. Osafo-Maafo stressed the need for a stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to boost job creation and economic growth. He noted that previous public sector reforms had not effectively leveraged the potential of the private sector to create jobs through efficient service delivery, suggesting a lack of alignment with key economic sectors.
In conclusion, the Senior Presidential Advisor encouraged active participation in local governance and emphasized the government’s commitment to institutionalizing reforms to improve service quality. He highlighted efforts to modernize regulatory frameworks and improve working conditions to enhance efficiency and service delivery in both the civil service and local government sectors.
