President Akufo-Addo’s Visit to Flooded Areas and Relief Pledge

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo conducted an inspection of the flooded regions within the lower Volta basin on Monday. During this visit, he expressed the government’s unwavering dedication to easing the plight of those affected by the floods. The President conveyed his condolences to the people impacted by this tragic event and assured them of government assistance.

The President made a commitment to support all those affected by the floods in the Volta Region, including North Tongu, South Tongu, and Central Tongu, emphasizing that politics should not interfere with disaster response. He stated, “When these things happen and government acts, politics does not come in at all. I took the oath of office as president to protect every citizen of Ghana, whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the president.”

President Akufo-Addo discussed his prompt response to the tragedy, even while he was abroad in the United States, and highlighted the government’s priority of safeguarding lives. He mentioned the establishment of a center in Mepe and the distribution of relief items by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Furthermore, he assured the farming communities affected by the flood that the Ministry of Agriculture would determine the support needed when the water recedes.

In addition to the immediate relief efforts by NADMO, an inter-ministerial committee is working on various phases of assistance. The President’s visit allowed him to assess the severe damage caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage in districts heavily impacted by the flooding. The Inter-Ministerial Committee, led by Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, is coordinating the government’s response to address the challenges posed by the dam spillage and provide relief to affected individuals.
