Franklin Cudjoe, the President of IMANI Africa, has strongly condemned the government’s sudden decision to cancel The Convention 2024 organized by the New Africa Foundation. Describing the move as reckless and comparable to “brigandry,” Cudjoe expressed deep concern over the abrupt cancellation that reportedly left numerous attendees stranded due to heavily armed security forces blocking entry to the venue.
Cudjoe’s criticism echoes the reservations raised by IMANI Africa regarding the handling of The Convention 2024 and the significant impact it had on the participants. He pointed out the contradiction between the President’s Constitution Day speech, where he pledged to uphold individual liberties and guarantee freedom of assembly and association, and the swift cancellation of a licensed public event organized by law-abiding citizens.
In a scathing remark, Cudjoe stated, “Less than five hours after his speech, his office strangely torpedoed a licensed public event a group of law-abiding citizens had put together, leaving thousands stranded as heavily armed security forces barred entry to the venue.” He characterized the reasons behind the cancellation as chaotic, reckless, and akin to brigandry.
The Diaspora Affairs Directorate at the Office of the President later provided clarification on the abrupt cancellation of The Convention 2024. Dr. Nadia Adongo Fynn, Deputy Director of the Diaspora Affairs Directorate, explained that the decision to revoke permission was prompted by the emergence of an “unforeseen” state event scheduled to take place at the Black Star Square venue.
While this clarification sheds light on the circumstances surrounding the sudden cancellation, the fallout from The Convention 2024 continues to stir controversy and disappointment among participants. Stay tuned for any further updates or developments related to this matter.
