Six in police custody for possessing illegal AK 47 ammunition

The Highway Patrol Team at the National Operations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspected dealers of AK 47 rifle with 12 rounds of ammunition.

The first suspect was arrested on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Osino in the Eastern Region after a Yuton bus heading from Accra-Bawku was stopped amid a search operation, which led to the retrieval of the ammunition.

According to a police statement issued on Monday, December 6 by ACP Kwesi Ofori, the Director General in charge of Public Affairs, an intelligence-led operation later led to the arrest of five more suspects.

The rest are Bashiru Salifu, Kassim Aninga, Mohammed Asako, Salifu James and Ibrahim Mohammed.

Alhassan Jamah, who is the main suspect among the six, is said to be involved in an illicit transaction of AK 47.

The statement noted that, the suspects are believed to be involved “in illegal arms transaction”.

Following this development, the police say “all suspects are currently in Police custody, assisting with the investigations.”

The Service lauded the Highway Patrol Team “for a good job done” and passengers on board the Yuton bus “for their cooperation and understanding during the operation”.

Touching on their willingness to combat crime in the country, the police administration said “we want to assure Ghanaians that we are indeed committed to working to safeguard their safety.”
