“Tap n’ Go”: GPRTU and Office of the Vice President Launch Digital Taxi Service in Accra

In a collaborative effort between the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Office of the Vice President, a new digital taxi service named ‘Tap n’ Go’ has been launched in Accra. The app, available for download on both Google Playstore and Apple App Store, operates similarly to established ride-hailing apps like Uber, Yango, and Bolt. Currently undergoing a pilot phase in specific areas of Accra, including Airport, East Legon, University of Ghana, Circle/Kaneshie area, and Dansoman, the full nationwide rollout is expected next year.

The launch of Tap n’ Go is a response to the challenges faced by Ghanaian taxi drivers due to the proliferation of foreign online taxi services. The National Chairman of the GPRTU, Nana Nimako Bresiamah, expressed gratitude to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for addressing their concerns and providing a timely solution to save their business. The GPRTU acknowledged the negative impact of foreign taxi apps on their operations, leading to a collaborative effort with Dr. Bawumia, who assured them of a viable solution.

Highlighting the significance of the app, Nana Nimako Bresiamah emphasized that Tap n’ Go is a Ghanaian-owned initiative, distinguishing it from foreign-controlled apps. The GPRTU urged its members to use the app professionally and effectively, providing quality service to Ghanaians and preserving the integrity of the union.

Several taxi drivers who spoke at the launch expressed satisfaction with the initiative, thanking Vice President Bawumia for supporting them and helping revive their business. The drivers appreciated having their own app, anticipating positive competition and improved business opportunities.

The Tap n’ Go app features ‘private dropping’ (private cars operating as taxis) and ‘metered service’ (allowing passengers to instantly stop a taxi and activate a meter to determine the charge), in addition to the standard online service. There are two applications available: Tap n’ Go for users and Tap n’ Go Driver for interested taxi drivers. Registration requirements for drivers include the Ghana Card to ensure traceability in the database.

The launch ceremony was attended by various GPRTU executives, including Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary; Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, National Vice Chairman; Jacob Odae, National First Trustee; Seth Tetteh, Greater Accra Regional Vice Chairman, among others. The introduction of Tap n’ Go aims to empower Ghanaian taxi drivers, offering them a locally-driven alternative in the digital transportation landscape.
