ST. CLAIRSVILLE — An outdoor Halloween event meant to provide youth and their families with a safe and healthy place to celebrate the holiday will be held from 6-9 p.m. today at the St. Clairsville Recreation Center Amphitheater.
The “Thriller Night” event is hosted by the Belmont County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.
Catherine Lanham, community prevention specialist for the coalition, said the evening will provide a safe space for the community to come together to enjoy the holiday.
“It’s a drug- and alcohol-free event. We wanted to provide an alternative for people to do during Halloween time, something fun,” she said, adding that there is no charge to attend.
A “Thriller” walk-parade will kick the evening off at 6 p.m. Lanham encourages everyone to don their favorite costume to participate in the parade, where they will reenact the famous Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance. She noted that costumes are not required for participation.
In addition to activities, games and the parade, the event will include a performance by Holly Forbes, a singer out of Catlettsburg, Kentucky who is best known for making it into the top 10 finalists on the television show
The Voice — Season 21. Forbes’ performance will begin at 8 p.m., with a DJ playing tunes leading up to the show.
Lanham said there will be 12 vendors set up, supplying an array of activities and games for those in attendance.
“We’ll also have resources available for mental health and substance abuse with the agencies,” she added.
Wood Fired Pizza Company will also be on site selling slices and beverages.
Lanham said they have their fingers crossed for good weather; however, there is a plan in place in the case of rain. If inclement weather occurs, the event will be moved to the Bellaire High School gym. Updates regarding a move in venue will be posted on the Coalition’s Facebook page.
Though this is the inaugural event, Lanham said they hope to make it an annual occurrence in the future. All ages are invited to attend.
“We wanted to make it where the concert and DJ are good for the whole family. … There will be something for all ages to do,” she said.
She said they are anticipating around 100 people to attend the soiree, and they look forward to having a fun and spooky evening.
